Why did you choose to participate in these study abroad programs?

I chose to participate in these programs to see various sights, landscapes, and cultures inside and outside the country that I had never experienced before! Before visiting Montana, I had never traveled to the mountains or National Parks, so this trip was a great experience on top of learning about land usage and conservation in the western United States. While visiting Costa Rica, I got to travel outside of the country for the first time and experience a different world of culture, climate, and dive into my interests to learn about the country's agricultural systems/operations, crops, and energy usage.

How did you benefit personally, professionally, or academically from your study abroad experiences?

I feel I benefited in many ways and personally have grown an appreciation for the lavish, such as fresh fruits and Costa Rican crops, or the stunning views of Montana's mountains and wildlife. I have also grown in academic and professional realms by gaining new perspectives and knowledge from various farmers on their operations/expertise that will be useful going forward.

What was your most memorable experience abroad?

My most memorable experience while visiting Montana was our backpacking trip through the mountains with the group and experiencing the fun and not-so-fun parts of hiking! In Costa Rica, getting the opportunity to tour small farms and operations to get an intimate insight into how specialty crops are managed was definitely not one to forget.

Have scholarships impacted your decision to study abroad?

Scholarships offered by either departmental funds or by CALS made a huge impact on my decision process of past and future trips. The funds made it possible to travel more comfortably and get an experience that you would not find traveling yourself.

What advice would you give to students interested in studying abroad?

I would say to take a chance on these programs as they include resources and travel plans that you would not find elsewhere. Having the chance to learn topics catered to your interests while in a different country is not an experience that comes very frequently!
