Studying abroad is truly a one of a kind experience you make so many lasting memories and valuable connections! I highly recommend to anyone that wants to explore the world and learn about new cultures!

How did you learn about your study abroad program? I learned about the program through the CALS Study Abroad website. While I already knew I wanted to study abroad, reading about the program details and opportunities on the website confirmed that it was the right fit for mSadie in front of cliffs of mohere.

Why did you choose to participate in the study abroad program? Studying at UCD was the perfect opportunity to connect more deeply with my family in Ireland while expanding my education in animal science. I wanted to learn how the industry operates in a different country and gain insights into international approaches and perspectives. At the same time, the experience allowed me to explore new places, immerse myself in different cultures, and grow both personally and professionally.

Do you think your experience benefited you personally, professionally, or academically? I believe that studying abroad has changed me both personally and academically. Through my experience in Ireland, I gained valuable insight into how the animal science industry differs from that in the United States and developed a broader understanding of global agricultural practices. The courses I took enhanced my knowledge and challenged me to think from new perspectives. In addition, I formed meaningful relationships with both classmates and professors, that I will carry with me throughout my life. It was also a great opportunity to learn more about myself and build my confidence. I can now take on anything life throws at me!

What is your favorite class you are taking abroad and how is it different/similar to classes at Iowa State? At UCD, I took Principles of Animal Health, Behavior, and Welfare. The course is co-taught by three industry professionals, and it was a unique opportunity to learn from experts with diverse backgrounds and perspectives. I found it especially interesting to explore animal health and welfare in greater depth while gaining insight into how industry laws, regulations, and standards differ from the United States. Hearing each instructor's perspective helped me develop a broader understanding of the challenges and opportunities within the animal science industry.

Sadie & friend in Portugal

Most memorable experience? Of all the experiences and places, I loved while studying abroad, the most memorable was the trip I took right after finals week. I spent four days in Faro, Portugal, relaxing on the beach and soaking up the sun, enjoying delicious food, and spending time with my friends. It was the perfect way to unwind after a busy semester and a wonderful way to close out my study abroad experience.

Have scholarships impacted your decision to study abroad? Yes!  Receiving a scholarship definitely made the opportunity more accessible and allowed me to focus on making the most of my experience rather than worrying about the cost!

What advice would you give to students interested in one of your programs or study abroad in general?  My advice would be to take advantage of the opportunity and step outside of your comfort zone. Try new things, meet new people, and explore as much as you can. Don't be afraid to study abroad because there are many resources and people who are willing to help you throughout the process. Studying abroad goes by quickly, so make the most of every experience and enjoy your time there.
