GO FOR IT! I know it can seem intimidating, and costly. But I promise you will learn so so much about not only agriculture, but also yourself.
Why did you choose to participate in the study abroad program(s)?
I chose these programs as I wanted a global experience that fit into my schedule. 2 week long faculty led study abroad was an amazing option for me to see the agricultural and cultural systems in both France and Ghana. Both West Africa and Paris have always been on my bucket list, and figured this was a great time to travel with those who have connections to get me places I wouldn't have otherwise gone to, and met with farmers in their fields, and connect with them personally.
In what ways did this experience contribute to your personal, professional, and/or academic growth?
These experiences contributed to my personal growth by widening my world view, I had been out of the county once before, but these trips were truly once in a lifetime and gave me so many connections I can use going forward. As a future farmer and agronomist here in Iowa, that international view on our agricultural production will benefit me for years to come, and challenge me to keep my eyes beyond my own community.
What was your most memorable experience abroad?
In France, It was the day that we visited the Champagne region. As the day went on, we ended by going to a small family vineyard and it felt like home. This was the first time I felt a connection to another farmer outside of the country, and that feeling of connection is unmatched and beautiful. In Ghana, it was the day that we visited the rubber plantation. For me this was the first tree crop I had seen, and getting to learn firsthand, and those who work in the field all day was a memory I will never forget. (also teaching the Ghanaian professor how to country swing dance!)

Nothing I didn't get through! Between learning how to work in a group when living together that intensively, and constantly meeting my own needs while traveling makes you a better person.
Did scholarships impact your decision to study abroad?
Yes, I received scholarships for both of my trips, and I am grateful I was able to have access to this financial aid.

I had, my family visited the centuries old family winery in SE Germany when I was younger.
