Why do you choose to lead study abroad program(s)?
I have enjoyed my relationships with individuals who raise pigs all over the world. I think giving students the opportunity to create those relationships while also learning how US agriculture influences global food production is an amazing experience.
What is unique about your study abroad destination(s)? Why do you want to take students to this country?
Japan is the number one importing country for high quality US pork. Seeing how the consumer uses US pork and how it is promoted and delivered to the country is valuable. Also being able to see both crop and livestock agriculture in a different landscape helps students learn about how other groups work towards sustainable agriculture practices.
Give an example of your favorite city, tour, tradition, or activity included within your program itinerary.
There are so many. I love watching the students engage with producers, but from an immersion in culture perspective, I have enjoyed watching them plant rice in the field, play games with Geishas, and trying to guess which Sumo wrestler will win!
Why should students study abroad?
While many of us hope that we can someday travel to many of these countries, this study abroad program gives students an immersive experience to meet with individuals working in fields of interest. Study abroad activities go beyond the typical tourism stops and at times, it can take a student to a level of professional interaction and tours that even career professionals don't experience when traveling to those countries for work.
