Just say yes! Studying abroad is one of the best decisions you can make in college.
Why did you choose to participate in this study abroad program? I wanted to deepen my understanding of agriculture in South America, and this program offered an incredible opportunity to learn directly from growers and industry professionals in Brazil and Argentina. Experiencing their production systems firsthand gave me a global perspective on the challenges and innovations shaping modern agriculture. I was also excited to explore new places, immerse myself in a different culture, and push myself to grow through new experiences.
In what ways did this experience contribute to your personal, professional, and/or academic growth? This experience truly opened my eyes to what agriculture looks like beyond the United States. It was fascinating to compare the similarities and differences between production agriculture in South America and the U.S., and it gave me a much clearer understanding of the realities growers face in that part of the world. The insights I gained will directly strengthen my academic work and my future career as an Iowa farmer. It was also an incredible opportunity to network with peers, discuss agriculture on a global scale, and grow personally through new experiences. Overall, this trip enriched me personally, professionally, and academically.
What was your most memorable experience abroad? My most memorable experience was visiting Iguazu Falls and taking the boat ride beneath the waterfalls. The views were absolutely breathtaking, and the experience of being that close to the falls made it an unforgettable moment. Another standout moment was touring Sementes Aurora, a row‑crop and seed production operation in southern Brazil. The conversations I had with the farmers there offered valuable insight into their production practices, challenges, and priorities. It was an exceptional opportunity to learn about Brazilian agriculture from those directly involved in it.
What advice do you have for students interested in studying abroad? Just say yes! Studying abroad is one of the best decisions you can make in college. It’s a once‑in‑a‑lifetime experience that pushes you to grow, see the world, and learn in ways you never expected. If you have the chance, take it. You won't regret it!
