Remain open minded, because this is where the deepest learning comes from.

Student posing by a body of waterWhy did you choose to participate in this study abroad program?

I have always thought it would be fascinating to participate in a study abroad experience, and the opportunity arose to learn about the vast agricultural sector of New Zealand as well as travel alongside some peers and a professor that I have traveled domestically with before.

In what ways did this experience contribute to your personal, professional, and/or academic growth?

With this being my first international experience, it led to several opportunities for growth. On a personal level I find that when I step outside my comfort zone or experience something new it allows me to learn more about myself. On this trip I discovered an appreciation for traveling and learning things like the differences in culture, politics, and agricultural management practices. After observing the magnitude of products New Zealand exports, it has encouraged me to think critically about were items similar to Kiwi, Milk, and Lumber, are produced to support the global economy. Professionally I found it intriguing to see firsthand innovative technology in action, such as Halter a virtual fence company for livestock, moreover, communicating with farmers, fishermen, and local business owners allowed me to gain deeper insight into operational goals, lifestyles as well as challenges New Zealanders face. Having been a part of this once in a lifetime experience, I can apply the knowledge and insights into my studies and professional career.

What was your most memorable experience abroad?

My most memorable experience abroad was not on the itinerary. One morning we had a few hours to grab breakfast and explore the local towns stores before heading out. Through a pervious internship opportunity, I was able to make a connection with a nearby Angus Seed stock operation that sells 150 pure bred angus bulls every year. After reaching out to the family I had the privilege of taking a short tour of their cow calf operation and seeing some of same genetic lines of bulls that I had worked with back in the states during my internship. All in all, this opportunity has reinforced for me the true value of building and maintaining lasting relationships.

What advice do you have for students interested in studying abroad?

My Biggest piece of advice would be to remain open minded, because this is where the deepest learning comes from. Secondly challenge yourself to try new things like food or even bungy jumping.
